6th Class Take Part in GLOBE Ireland River Ecosystem Project
It was a great day for 6th Class in SNB as they took part in the GLOBE Ireland River Ecosystem Project.
As part of the project, pupils visited the river in Clonakilty to investigate and assess the health of the waterway. They carried out a range of tests on the river water, including checking for phosphate, nitrates, pH, and temperature. These tests helped the pupils to build a clearer picture of the water quality in our local river.
The children also took a kick sample from the river bed to search for invertebrates, which can tell us a lot about the health of a river ecosystem. By identifying the small creatures living in the water, pupils were able to learn more about biodiversity and how scientists monitor the condition of rivers.
This was a fantastic hands-on learning experience, giving pupils the opportunity to work like real scientists while developing a greater understanding of the natural environment in Clonakilty.
Well done to all the boys for their enthusiasm, teamwork, and excellent participation in this very worthwhile project.
